I'm really upset that the Huffington Post allowed guest editor Jim Carey to write an article that suggests people shouldn't vaccinate their kids.
A special "vaccine court" ruled that there is no evidence of a link between vaccines and autisms. The anti-vacc argument is based entirely on 'but...what if?'. Every theory has been shot down, and still, 'news' sources are still giving Jim Carey and Jenny McCarthy a forum to spout their anti-science.
Most people aren't buying into it, but enough are. Our 'herd immunity' is weakening. Measles are coming back.
I feel bad for the parents that are in the situation that Jenny McCarthy was in; her son developing autism, and her wondering, 'Was it something I did?'. It's sad, and very serious.
Autism occurs in kids at an age that is shorty after they would have been vaccinated. To assume causation is a fallacy called 'Post Hoc', literally "after this, therefore because of this".
I'm not going to jump into the biological reasons why their arguments are flawed, as others have already done this better than I would. The reality is, that I don't need to. It's the job of the accuser to provide evidence.
This is why I have removed one of the most popular blogs in the world from my daily reader feed. I wrote this entry to add my voice to what so many others are saying right now. Personally, I don't blame Jim Carey or Jenny McCarthy. Hasty or emotional opinions are nothing new. I blame Huffington Post and CNN for making these opinions news.
